“We’ve Come This Far By Faith”
Hebrew 11:1-2

October 2009

Dear Family Members:

Greetings! We pray that this letter finds everyone in good health— and are pleased to announce that The Pittman-Lyons-Bunn Family Reunion will be held in Philadelphia, PA on July 16-18, 2010.

Following last year's success in Poughkeepsie, we invite you to join us for a joyous family reunion in Philadelphia. We've spent the last few months putting together a schedule to satisfy everyone-- a Friday picnic, see the city's attractions during the day on Saturday, enjoy the evening Dinner Program and end with breakfast on Sunday.
We kept costs down to $85.00 for adults and $55.00 for children; registration forms are included in this mailing. We are also offering a payment schedule to help spread costs over the eight months. Make reservations at the Double Tree Hotel ($139.00 per night) by contacting the hotel at (215) 893-1600.

Please share this mailing with family members and keep posted on reunion plans by going to our web blog: http://pittmanlyonsbunn.blogspot.com/. If you have questions, do not hesitate to call Ruby Hurry at (845) 471-6372.

We hope to see you in Philadelphia!

Sincerely,

Poughkeepsie Reunion Committee

LIVE TO SEE NOTHIN' HAPPEN.......

This is a slightly adjusted piece I wrote a few weeks ago for another website.

If I live to see nothin' happen..... Ma and Grandma used to say this all the time before or after mentioning something they wanted or needed to do. "Live to see nothin' happen, I'm going uptown this weekend......I'm getting the plants out next week---live to see nothin' happen."

It was a testament to the power of the unknown and an appreciation for the blessings of life we are given everyday. As simple as it sounds, waking up in the morning is at God's will. Live to see nothing happen meant nothing was taken for granted. On the farm in Whitakers, North Carolina I guess they believed in this phrase more than anything. As sharecroppers, they had little assurance about what the next day, month or year could bring. In fact, we migrated to New York (I was five) after learning that the landowner deceitfully calculated that Grandma owed him hundreds of dollars for a dead mule. Earlier that year, I imagine that Grandma had uttered those words more than once----Live to see nothing happen. It was a snowy Sunday in January of 1965 when we left the farm for Poughkeepsie.

If I live to see nothin' happen..... I grew up hearing them say this in all its mystery. Only now do I understand how it acknowledges a power which we do not have. We can do everything in our control to plan our next steps but there's an infinite power that controls our destiny. Live to see nothin' happen speaks to more than literal life; it speaks also to the present and how we can treasure what we already have.
Ask that you live to see nothin' happenbut live life fully while you can.

Black Family Pledge

BLACK FAMILY PLEDGE
by Maya Angelou

Because we have forgotten our ancestors our children no longer give us honor.

Because we have lost the path our ancestors cleared, kneeling in perilous undergrowth, our children cannot find their way.

Because we have banished the God of our ancestors, our children can not pray.

Because the long wails of our ancestors have faded beyond our hearing, our children cannot hear us crying.

Because we have abandoned our wisdom of mothering and fathering, our befuddled children give birth to children they neither want nor understand.

Because we have forgotten how to love, the adversary is within our gates, and holds us up to the mirror of the world, shouting, Regard the loveless.

Therefore, we pledge to bind ourselves again to one another;
To embrace our lowliest,
To keep company with our loneliest,
To educate our illiterate,
To feed our starving,
To clothe our ragged,
To do all good things, knowing that we are more than keepers of our brothers and sisters. We are our brothers and sisters.

In honor of those who toiled and implored God with golden tongues, and in gratitude to the same God who brought us out of hopeless desolation,

We make this pledge.

First Reunion: Family Matriarchs

The first Poughkeepsie Reunion(1987)was built around three family matriarchs, Edna "Miss Sis" Lyons(top), Leona "Miss Sister" Lyons(middle), and Mary "May" Lyons(bottom). From these three are many roots and branches to this family tree. We also acknowledge other matriarchs and patriarchs as we come together this year.

12 days and counting.........

Remember these words from one of the family matriarchs (played by Cicely Tyson) in Madea's Family Reunion?

Family reunions are about uniting the family, bringing together the young and old. Singing and dancing and thanking God, giving him the glory. Thanking him for getting us over. As we marched up the road this afternoon, what we saw were young men gambling, fighting, cussing. Women with no clothes on gyrating all over on this land. Do you see this shack. The man and woman we were born here gave birth to this generation. They were slaves. They worked this ground, but they bought it from the widow of the slave owner and that's the kind of blood we have running though our veins. That's the stock we are made of. What happened to us. What happened to us. Who are you. Do you know who you are. What happened to the pride and the dignity and the love and respect that we had for one another. Where did it go. And how, How do we get it back. I'ma tell you. Young Black men, take your place. We need you. Your sons and daughters need you. Did you understand what I just said. You were sold off and had no choice, yes but now it's time to stay. Take your place. Now. Starting now. Starting now. Young black women, you are more than your thighs and your hips. You are beautiful, strong, powerful. I want more from you. Take your place. I want every single one of you, young man, young woman, turn to the next person standing alongside of you. Grab them and hug them and tell them that you love 'em. Tell them, 'If you need anything, come to me.' 'If you need somebody to talk to, come to me.' 'I'll give you the shoulder, I'll give you the hug. I'll feed you, I'll clothe you if you need it. That's how you start from this moment. When you leave this reunion today, you take that with you.

PITTMAN FARM

Before coming to Pougkeepsie in the mid-1950s, the Pittman Lyons Bunn families lived and worked on Pittman Farm in Whitakers, NC. The families worked plots of land owned by white families (known as sharecropping) which was not profitable for us at all. Each family had their reasons for leaving the farm for Poughkeepsie. Usually a son, daughter, aunt, cousin, etc. left and then sent back information about jobs and housing.
